Visible Software provides two Pascal interpreters: pc-pix for Windows and MS-DOS, and mac-pix for Macintosh. Both implement the full (Classic) Standard Pascal langauge, but are bare-bones environments. Like Dr. Pascal, they have clear syntax error messages and very extensive checking for runtime errors. They are standards-compliant Pascal systems. However, they are just a once through, interpret-and-execute system. To use, you: 1) edit your program, 2) run pix, 3) note lines with error messages (like, with a pencil), 4) use a text editor (not supplied) to find the lines with syntax errors and fix them, 5) save the file and 6) run pix again, etc. Dr. Pascal is much easier and faster because it does all this within a single integrated package, plus more important, it shows what your program is doing as it runs.
On the other hand, the price of pix is right--one dollar. That's right, a whole Pascal language system for one dollar! The last Pascal compiler Visible Software bought for its own use cost us $559.00 (Metrowerks 7.0, on sale in March 2002 for "only" $559.00). So we figure that our $1 Pascal system represents about a 99.82% discount from the leading brand! When was the last time you got something at a 99.82% discount? To purchase, for Mac, DOS or Windows, go to "Pay and Download", at ePurchase. (Not available by mail order.) An earlier version of both pc-pix and mac-pix was included as a bonus to buyers of several computer science textbooks from major publishers ("free" bonus after you bought a $40 - $60 textbook). The versions we have here are updated and have bugs fixed. Our updated pix also goes beyond the standard Pascal on the textbook bonus copy, with some features of Extended Pascal that can be activated by a special comment. |
